we tossed everything at it and it ignored it. Finally I gave up and tried to land my squid jig right on top of it (mental note - always take a squid gaff). Anyway it is still swimming there if anyone wants to get back before the next big high tide. But that is not my story. We had a great morning and Duncan landed a couple of good squid. We were getting ready to leave when Duncan hooked the biggest squid I have ever seen. For anyone who has seen the Japanese style squiding DVD's and marvelled at the big squid this baby left them for dead. Measuring in at about a metre and thicker around the girth than our 2 year old this was a monster. I ran for the camera, Duncan raced down the jetty because the squid was heading for the pylon and unfortunately (well fortunately for it) we lost it. We all just looked at each other and couldn't wipe the grins off our faces. I can safely say that Duncan is now well and truely hooked on eging. For those of you into your landbased squiding - there are some great squid still around and after today I would even dare to say some monsters. Don't just restrict yourself to night time either. This guy was heading out of the mangroves at about 8.30am.
(When we were talking about it later Lachlan (our 4 year old) informed me that he thought the Japanese man from his DVD came to Australia and bought a big squid with him and let it go. That is how the monster Japanese squid got here. Don't you love 4 year old logic.)
until next time... Janelle
